I say there is no time in life that the soul does not know love.

When he says,“Was my soul so heavy when I was just a boy, or did it grow fat and sickly only when burdened with the overwhelming joy of this magnificent passage through life?” I say that no soul becomes sickly because of an over abundance of joy. Only a soul that harbors hate, resent and regret can become sickly.

When he says, “At times I think if I could bottle up my love and cast it out to the waves, I would; only loneliness has been a reliable companion on my journey. Without the burden of love, my sorrow could be complete. What wicked and tiresome trouble love creates for us all.”
I say that loneliness is never a companion, and that love can never be wicked. I think Nathanial is confusing Love and Loneliness with affection and dependency.
Nathanial would be best to throw out those notions that chain him to the path of misery and sorrow. In doing so he can enjoy, "The song of the world [that] is at times too beautiful to bear listening to..."
He is right on one thing, Love is like the water. While it is turbulent at times and seemingly indomitable, it has the ability to cleanse, create and renew life and most importantly is ever present and almost everywhere we look, especially within ourselves.
jportnofhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/10698231723566876103noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6092501133743109770.post-2882882096097996872013-03-12T18:44:01.318-04:002013-03-12T18:44:01.318-04:00This really helped especially with my homework i ...This really helped especially with my homework i thought those where the best points i have ever seen and i loved the extra explanation and i think all what you said was right and should be complained about cyclists!Anonymoushttps://www.blogger.com/profile/05341448264323779519noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6092501133743109770.post-79955021386370253282012-10-30T09:26:36.109-04:002012-10-30T09:26:36.109-04:00That's the main reason I wear one - to shut th...That's the main reason I wear one - to shut the f*ckers up.
michael tewhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/03270429900172816847noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6092501133743109770.post-19370919275984235992012-10-16T20:21:04.500-04:002012-10-16T20:21:04.500-04:00Thanks for the good point, Raymond. In any situati...Thanks for the good point, Raymond. In any situation where your head is being scraped across the pavement, I think a helmet is certainly a very beneficial thing to have on your head. I would like to reiterate that I feel helmets provide a great deal more safety in any road accident than a naked skull.

My decision to not wear a helmet stems more from the fact that I feel it sends the wrong message to people; it tells other road users that I need to wear armor to be safe on the roads, and that I feel my Styrofoam hat will protect me from harm if it gets hairy out there. I don't believe either of those things to be true, so I am compelled to disregard a garment that suggests otherwise.Jeremyhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/03299818291814303272noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6092501133743109770.post-88658271668766917952012-10-16T19:01:25.450-04:002012-10-16T19:01:25.450-04:00I've heard that one of the benefits of helmets...I've heard that one of the benefits of helmets, particularly motorcycle-style helmets is that the rounded smooth plastic is more difficult for the pavement to grip. This means that instead of all of the momentum acting on a struck cyclist causing traumatic impact upon contact with the ground (due to the sudden stop caused by friction), the victim will continue sliding, allowing all of that force to more gradually be expended. This reduces the end result from fatal to possibly harmless (which is also why, I've heard, bikers typically wear leather).

Granted most bicycle helmets are not smooth and round, but appropriate helmets can be found if you look.Anonymoushttps://www.blogger.com/profile/05801640597272007429noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6092501133743109770.post-52103084298764065162012-09-11T09:37:18.616-04:002012-09-11T09:37:18.616-04:00I am right there with you my friend. I'm sure it helps that I've actually HEARD your impassioned tirades about outrageous cyclist and motorist behavior, but my initial comment stands. I love your blog because it's so true to you, and I think you're pretty dang awesome. Though I am a bit concerned that my lack of experience when it comes to city biking could land me on your 'list'. While I wait for my bike to be finished, I'll be studying up to become a competent, responsible, Jeremy-approved cyclist.

GMHUnknownhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/13842908915322524953noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6092501133743109770.post-82635402390539909212012-08-29T17:49:27.922-04:002012-08-29T17:49:27.922-04:00This post reminded me of a conversation I had with...This post reminded me of a conversation I had with a friend a few months ago, the thought of which always makes me smile. It went something (er, exactly) like this:

Friend: Did I ever tell you who was on the plane with me when I flew back home to Napa from Boston? It popped into my head today.

Me: Ezra Koenig?

Friend: Okay, so I did tell you. His perfect boyish face flashed behind my eyes as soon as I woke up. It's strange that someone can mark a part of you without knowing.

Me: I think you told me before you even got on the plane that you saw him. It is strange, but it's also kind of nice. It makes me feel more connected to people, thinking that I could have also left little marks without realizing.

Anyway, I don't expect my non-perfect, non-boyish face to be flashing behind anyone's eyes when they wake up in the morning, nor do I expect everyone I've ever met or conversed with to remember me, but I've always found the way we store our impressions and memories of people to be fascinating. I often feel like I fall on the other end of the spectrum, though-- I recognize faces quickly, but mix up the memories connected to those faces; a reminder of a single experience doesn't necessarily string together all of our shared experiences. My recognition-sensation comes in the form of emotional memories... How I felt about the person during the course of our interactions, rather than what the specific content of the interactions was.

When I run into these types of people, I'm always curious about their memories of me. How did I secure my spot in their working-memory of faces, and why is the memory not always mutual?

I totally meant for this to just be a little story about the guy from Vampire Weekend, but I guess I got a little carried away... Whoops!
Unknownhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/13842908915322524953noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6092501133743109770.post-2065736668203922722012-08-14T16:26:14.491-04:002012-08-14T16:26:14.491-04:00Right on Jeremy! I know you have been in cars with me when I get annoyed and rant about how drivers should always signal. It is not only courteous but also an extremely easy and effective safety tool that all drivers have at their disposal. My favorite is when Drivers are going along in the left lane as if they plan to continue going straight then they stop short at the light and make a left instead! I hope more people read this post and follow your simple logical advice! jportnofhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/10698231723566876103noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6092501133743109770.post-32600346082229740172012-08-07T13:51:21.131-04:002012-08-07T13:51:21.131-04:00Another awesome article. But, although I'm not a cyclist, what I walk away from this blog with is this: Fenders! As I'm out and about, I see bikers and cyclists here and there but now I will be looking for the real hard-core cyclists. How? By seeing if they have fenders on their bikes! When I moved from Mass (the greater Boston area) to Sanford, ME I went from using my horn fairly regularly (you're right, "Because of the overuse of car horns in a typical urban setting, the sound of a horn blasting doesn't really mean much anymore," to hardly ever, almost never using it! When I do, which is literally maybe once a year, it sounds loud, harsh, offensive and overbearing. If you ever want to get away from the horns, you and Cilla are welcome to move up here anytime :)PriscillaAAhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/05709174403007614652noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6092501133743109770.post-24874197252518952332012-07-03T13:10:32.815-04:002012-07-03T13:10:32.815-04:00Wow, one disposable razor for a year? I imagine the skin of your leg is a bit tougher than the skin of your face--I would not be happy shaving my neck hair with an old disposable razor. Of course, if women switched to a three-pass shave for their legs, it would probably take them an hour to finish! In fact, he'd gotten a "wet shave" from a local barber on the morning of our wedding! I hope this will inspire some guys to try "wet shaving," experience it, branch out, try something new, etc. I personally will probably stick w/my disposables, since for me they're dirt cheap and last between 6 mos. to a year. You only wasted twenty-two years or so tying them the granny way, I mean using the "granny" knot, it could've been worse, you might've stumbled onto the "square" knot twenty-two years from now or worse, never, and look at all the wasted seconds which would have added up to minutes, hours, days, weeks, months and maybe even years of retying your shoes every single day! We've had a few people let go from where I work and getting the details about "why" is like pulling teeth. My main concern for knowing is so that I myself don't repeat whatever it was that got that person fired, because I want to keep my job. Knowing what brought their termination about would help me avoid that situation but for some reason, most of the time rumors fly about why someone's gone and it leaves an unsettled feeling in the workplace. Where I work we don't deal directly w/the public but in your case, it's all the more important to air things out because you all have multiple daily interactions w/the public and having a tense-free atmosphere would only benefit the employees, the customers and the company.PriscillaAAhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/05709174403007614652noreply@blogger.com
